We currently are the proud pup-parents to Shiloh, our Newfy girl, Smokey, our boy Newfy and Raven, our sweet Labrador that thinks she is the momma to our two Newfs. They are all such gentle and loving dogs. It is true what they say, Newfoundlands are the Gentle Giants of dog breeds. They are all raised in a healthy, loving environment. We have them in house with us at all times. They are surrounded by kids, young and old. They love to travel with us and enjoy going on vacations to the beach and mountains, going to work with us and just running everyday errands.
We are proud members of the Newfoundland Club of America and the Colonial Newfoundland Club of Virginia. They have competed in several draft competitions throughout the Eastern US and are currently training for their water rescue certifications.
Shiloh came to us in 2019 from a reputable breeder in Tennessee and North Carolina. She comes from a long line of Champion Newfoundlands. She is currently training for conformation as well as to be a therapy dog visiting sick children in the hospital.
Smokey came to us in 2020 from a very reputable breeder in Minnesota. He too comes from a long line of Champion Newfoundlands and is also training for conformation as well as to be a service dog, specifically for Type 1 Diabetes.
We have had Raven since 2014. She came to us through Service Dogs of Virginia for which we have volunteered as a puppy raiser. She unfortunately did not last long as a Service Dog for Service Dogs of VA due to being too friendly to other people and dogs and not wanting to lay quietly all day long. We adopted her on as our personal pet and a year later our son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, so we continued her training to be his Service Dog and detect his High’s and Low’s of T1D. All three dogs quickly became an important part of our family and our community.
Newfoundlands are the Olympic champion swimmers of the dog world. They excel at water rescue/lifesaving because of their muscular build, thick double coat, webbed paws and swimming abilities. They are hard workers that enjoy pulling boats, rescuing people from the water, or just pulling carts with Christmas Trees.
They are known for their giant size, intelligence, calm disposition, and loyalty. They can be black, brown, grey or white, however, only the black and Landseer (white-and-black) colored dogs are considered to be proper members of the breed.
They make excellent family pets, they are great with kids and other pets as well.
They do, however, shed quite a bit and require routine grooming. And of course, don’t forget the drool! May not make the best pet for the neat freak, although, even with 3 dogs and 4 kids I find it manageable - just invest in a good vacuum! :)
